On Monday 16th June the Improving Black Health Outcomes (IBHO) BioResource team attended the Royal Papworth World Sickle Day held at the Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Heart & Lung Research Institute in Cambridge.
The event, focused on raising awareness of sickle cell, consisted of networking and engagement sessions with experts in the area talking about research, early interventions and the way Papworth is leading the way for patients undergoing surgery.
The team joined partner colleague Hazel Attua, Research Participation and Involvement Manager in the Diverse Data team at Genomics England, who gave a presentation about her lived experience with sickle cell, how the IBHO BioResource is aiming to increase representation of people from Black communities in health research, as well as our work together on building a dedicated sickle cell research resource.
Reflecting on the event, Hazel said:
"It was an unforgettable day bringing together patients, carers, healthcare professionals, and researchers in a way that was truly inspiring.
"The energy in every conversation and the passion in every presentation was truly incredible.
"It made me believe, more than ever, that this programme of work has the power to create real, lasting change for our community."
At the end of the sessions, attendees had the opportunity to speak to our research nurses about joining the IBHO BioResource, with 10 people registering their interest.
